JOYSTICK
Our 50 years of experience qualify us to co-design boots and bellows for joysticks, and to customize them for special devices by supporting the customer during the entire project phase.

Continuous collaboration with our mold makers and partners, coupled with the latest technology, have enabled us to greatly improve the level of materials and design. So now we are able to deliver bellows with excellent durability, which are highly resistant to low or high temperatures, and are aesthetically pleasing, featuring invisible mold parting lines and injection points.

Description

Rubber Bellows for Joysticks and Control Levers

Barbieri Rubber rubber bellows for joysticks are flexible protections dedicated to control levers, joysticks on construction machinery, agricultural and industrial vehicles, garage equipment and special equipment. They protect the internal mechanism from dust, dirt, splashes and moisture, while keeping full freedom of movement throughout the actuation range. They are catalog rubber components and custom-designed versions for special joysticks.

What a joystick bellows is for

The joystick bellows protects the control base from external contamination, preventing dust, abrasives, oil and moisture from reaching the internal mechanism. Designed to allow spherical or lever motion of the joystick while keeping the opening sealed. Typical on agricultural machinery, excavators, loaders, cranes, vehicle service equipment, hydraulic pump units and manual control panels.

Available compounds and typical hardness

The most common compounds for joystick bellows are NBR for oil environments, EPDM for outdoor and UV exposure. The bellows must be soft enough not to resist joystick motion and to ensure operator comfort.

Compound Temperature range Feature Typical applications
NBR (Nitrile) -40 / +130 °C Mineral oil resistance Hydraulics, automotive
EPDM -40 / +100 °C Water, steam, ozone, UV Hydraulics, outdoor, photovoltaic
VMQ (Silicone) -60 / +200 °C High temperature Food, high-T
FKM (Viton®) -10 / +180 °C Aggressive oils, solvents Chemical, automotive, hydraulics
HNBR -20 / +160 °C Oil + high temperature Heavy-duty hydraulics
NR / SBR -50 / +90 °C Mechanical elasticity Anti-vibration, general

Catalog standard version and custom designs

The standard range of joystick bellows covers the most requested base and end diameters, with active tooling at Barbieri Rubber and no tooling cost for the customer. For custom joysticks we produce bellows on drawing: the customer provides at least a preliminary drawing with end diameters, angular stroke, number of convolutions and target compound. The dedicated mold is manufactured in cooperation with our trusted toolmaking partners.

Application sectors of joystick bellows

Joystick bellows are used on agricultural machinery (tractors, harvesters, self-propelled equipment), earth-moving machinery (excavators, loaders, mini-excavators), cranes and lifts, industrial vehicles, vehicle service equipment, hydraulic control benches, automation pilot panels. They cover recurrent protection needs for manual control levers.

Frequently asked questions

Which joysticks are compatible with standard bellows?

Standard catalog bellows cover the most recurrent base and end diameters in the market. For non-standard joysticks the custom-design version applies, with dedicated tooling.

Which compound should I choose?

For enclosed cabins and oil-exposed environments NBR is chosen. For outdoor vehicles and UV exposure EPDM. For extended temperature range or aggressive environments VMQ silicone. Selection is done case by case.

Can I order custom joystick bellows?

Yes. For custom joysticks or control levers with special geometries we produce bellows on drawing. At least a preliminary drawing from the customer is required. The dedicated mold is manufactured in cooperation with our trusted toolmaking partners.

Which hardness should I choose?

Typically 40-60 Shore A. Low hardness reduces movement resistance and ensures operational freedom for the operator.

Are they suitable for intensive use?

Yes. Compound and hardness are selected to ensure long life even in intensive use conditions, typical of agricultural and earth-moving vehicles. For heavy-duty use, fatigue-resistant compounds are chosen.

Restrictions and Relative Solutions

The polar movement of levers and joysticks significantly complicates the behavior of any protection that can be installed. A rubber bellow is the best solution to avoid short life and cracks, but if the bellow is not properly designed it will present defects during prolonged use, mainly in the convolutions, this will cause an unsatisfactory aesthetic result but will also reduce the operability. It is very important to study the angles and movement amplitude to design the bellows so that they are able to follow all the possible positions and path with no internal material stress.

Moreover, the joystick bellow is a component that stands out, so it is very important to utilize the new special compounds in order to obtain a product that is functional, but at the same time meets the required aesthetics.

Materials

During the past 50 years of our research all our bellows and boots materials have been continually improved and tested onsite and even in customer laboratories in order to improve all the material’s features.

Our joystick bellows are mostly produced with special materials, only by express request by the customer do we use standard compounds, and then only for more basic bellows applications, using such polymers as NBR, EPDM, CR. The new compounds of today are a special mix of this standard polymeric material plus other additives and preservative materials. There are designed to withstand wide temperature ranges. These materials are excellent for outdoor applications because they are resistant to degradation by exposure to the sun’s UV rays, and can be formulated to be also resistant to prolonged contact with mineral oils and greases.

In the electronic joystick sector, BARBIERI RUBBER has also developed compounds with total absence of sulfur, which is conductive and used when migrating could cause undesired contacts. In addition, aniti-static, conductive and dielectric compounds have been set-developed and they have to be selected according to the electrical application to which they are subjected.

For special applications, new molding technologies now allow for bellows production in more sophisticated materials such as: VMQ, Silicone, FKM, Viton, CR, Neoprene, and Chloroprene.
