Flat seals

Washer-shaped rubber gaskets provide a larger sealing surface than traditional O-rings, ensuring high performance under both low and high compression. Suitable for a wide range of static and dynamic applications, they adapt well to varying pressure levels. The choice of rubber compound and hardness is critical, as even small changes can significantly impact elasticity, deformation, and durability. These gaskets are ideal for industrial environments requiring long-lasting and efficient sealing solutions.

Manufacturing processes: from mold or from molded sleeve

Barbieri Rubber uses two different production processes according to customer requirements.

From mold — Molding each washer individually allows very tight tolerances. Edges cannot have a 0 radius due to mold manufacturing requirements. It is the ideal solution for small batches that require good surface finish and precise tolerances.

From molded sleeve — The rubber sleeve is molded with the exact inner and outer diameters of the washer to be produced, then cut to the desired thickness with special machinery. The result is perfectly flat gaskets with sharp 0-radius edges, also ideal for automatic assembly.

Available materials

The choice of compound and hardness is decisive: even small variations can significantly affect elasticity, deformation and gasket life. We produce rubber flat seals in NBR EPDM, as well as SBR, VMQ and other technical compounds for industrial use.

Compound Temperature range Property Typical applications
NBR (Nitrile) -40 / +130 °C Mineral oil resistance Hydraulics, automotive
EPDM -40 / +100 °C Water, steam, ozone, UV Outdoor, photovoltaic
VMQ (Silicone) -60 / +200 °C High temperatures, biocompatible Food, medical
FKM (Viton®) -10 / +180 °C Aggressive oils and solvents Chemical, automotive
NR / SBR -50 / +90 °C Mechanical elasticity Antivibration, general

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum production batch?

Barbieri Rubber flat gaskets are produced to order. The minimum production batch is 10,000 pieces.

What is the difference between mold production and molded sleeve production?

Mold production is ideal for small quantities with tight tolerances. Molded sleeve production is more cost-effective for large quantities and ensures sharp edges, perfect flatness and automatic assembly capability.

Can gaskets be custom-made from drawing?

Yes. Barbieri Rubber manufactures custom flat rubber gaskets from technical drawings, selecting the most suitable compound and production process for the application.

How do I choose the right compound?

The choice depends on the operating environment: NBR for contact with oils and greases, EPDM for outdoor use or weathering exposure, VMQ for high temperatures or food applications, SBR for general use.

Additional information

Using a mold

The manufacturing process for molding of individual rubber seals makes it possible to achieve extremely limited tolerances, but the edges of the seal cannot have a radius of 0 due to mold processing requirements.

– Good surface finish
– Very narrow tolerances
– Possibility of small production runs

On the other hand, it is not possible to obtain gaskets with sharp edges.

Using a molded sleeve

This manufacturing process involves cutting the seal from a molded rubber sleeve.

First of all, a rubber sleeve is molded with the exact internal and external diameter of the finished seal but with a much greater length. Once this “rubber pipe” has been obtained, it is cut using special machinery to the required thickness, thus creating the required seal. This system produces perfectly flat seals with 0 radius edges.

However, to obtain economical rubber seals using this manufacturing process it is necessary to produce medium to large runs.

In short, the advantages of using this seal manufacturing process are:

– Thickness tolerance +/- 0.10.

– Excellent quality-price ratio, in particular for large quantities.

– Perfectly flat pieces, which can also be used for automatic assembly.

– Ability to create seals of different thicknesses using the same sleeve, without having to go to the expense of additional molds.

– Maximum seal thanks to the sharp edges.

Production minimum quantity

Washers are produced on commission; we don't keep them in stock.

The minimum production quantity is 10,000 Pcs
